Newstead Open Studios 2021

In 2021 it was bowls: coiled, pressed into a leaf-lined plaster bowl, creating textures on the outside. Once the bowl came out of the mould, the leaves formed a stencil as I covered the outside with white slip. Then I started pressing the coils into texture – a banksia cone, old timber and other surfaces – and used the textured coil in a mould to form the bowl. Loved these experiments. Some photos show the work in process.

Julie Patey, wonderful friend and printmaker, shared my studio this year. I’m so lucky to have such wonderful artist friends at Place Matters Studio each year. Julie says that she works in mixed media, beginning with printmaking, she adds pastel, watercolour and stains, embedding textures into beautiful handmade papers. She is inspired by colours that reflect the country.
